Advisory, Convening, and Facilitation Hub for Sustainable and Resilient Environmental Solutions
The NEERI Sustainability Hub is envisioned as a national-level advisory, convening, and facilitation platform for sustainable environmental solutions, positioned at a critical juncture where India must address complex challenges such as air pollution, water stress, waste management, and climate risks by bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and large-scale implementation.
Building on CSIR–NEERI’s longstanding leadership in environmental science and engineering, the Hub will function not only as a technical advisor but also as a convener, bringing together government (central, state, and urban local bodies), industry, civil society, and academia to co-create and accelerate solutions.
As an integrated platform, the Hub will provide evidence-based advisory and policy support through policy briefs, white papers, strategic notes, and technical guidelines, while serving as a thought leadership engine and convening platform by organizing flagship sustainability forums, leadership dialogues, thematic roundtables, and brainstorming sessions on emerging environmental issues to shape future policy and research directions.
The Hub will further enable partnerships and stakeholder engagement via multi-stakeholder platforms, national and international collaborations, and facilitation of coordinated implementation frameworks, while catalyzing action through conclaves, innovation forums, and pilot initiatives emerging from dialogue platforms.
Operating through a multi-scale implementation framework comprising local “Action Labs” for city-level implementation, regional scaling platforms for cross-state replication, and a national policy and strategy interface contributing to missions and programs, the Hub will deliver a strengthened science–policy–action interface, institutionalize sustainability dialogues, create a dynamic repository of high-impact knowledge products, enhance governance and leadership capacities, and accelerate adoption of scalable environmental solutions.
This policy-oriented technical report by CSIR–NEERI presents a comprehensive roadmap to transform India’s solid waste sector by adopting circular economy principles.
The report provides an in-depth analysis of major waste streams, including municipal solid waste, plastics, e-waste, construction and demolition waste, and biomedical waste.
It proposes a systems-based framework integrating decentralized waste management, advanced recycling technologies, and digital tools such as AI, IoT, and blockchain.
Aligned with India’s climate commitments and sustainable development goals, the report highlights strategies to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.
Serving as both a strategic guide and a policy enabler, the document aims to support policymakers, industry, and practitioners.
A stakeholders’ brainstorming meeting on the theme “Nagpur Environment – Sustainable Solutions Symposium” was organized at CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute.
The event brought together diverse stakeholders on a common platform to deliberate on initiatives aimed at enhancing Nagpur’s environmental resilience.
Senior representatives and experts from multiple organizations actively participated.
The programme featured parallel breakout sessions on four thematic areas, namely Air & Noise Environment, Biodiversity and Climate Change, Solid Waste Management, and Water Environment.
Participants engaged in detailed deliberations on challenges, explored practical solutions, and discussed future roadmaps.
The rapporteurs of each thematic session will prepare detailed reports summarizing discussion points, stakeholder responsibilities, and sustainable interventions.
