Municipal Solid Waste Management
National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Nagpur has been engaged in the research and development of better and scientific solid waste management practices, for more than four decades. The primary focus of the solid waste management has been shifting over the years from quantification and characterization of solid waste in early years to reuse, recycle, and energy recovery from solid waste in recent years. This division has been contributing significantly to Municipal Solid Waste Management research always keeping in view the contemporary focus of the research. Accordingly this division has aligned its research towards the scientific and technical needs for the Swachha Bharat Abhiyan. The division has expertise and research capabilities in following domains of the MSW management.
Hazardous Waste Management:
This division has done pioneering work in the area of Hazardous Waste Management and the focus of the research has always been addressing the contemporary issues, regulations, and industrial requirements for the sustainable development. The research efforts of the division have been catalyzing sustainable development of industries throughout these years. The different aspects of hazardous waste management covered and the expertise developed are as follows.
The division is actively involved in addressing the policy issues, regulatory frameworks, and societal needs through its research endevours and participation in various State level and National Advisory committees.
New research initiatives have been taken for E-waste management, Hydrogen production from solid residues, bioreactor landfills, and demonstration of MSW management, specifically biomethanation and composting, facilities for rural areas.
In addition division supports academic and frontier research in the waste management through the doctoral and post graduate research work in collaboration with National and International Universities. Division has international research collaborations with research organizations from different countries such as UK, Italy, Switzerland, South Korea etc.
