In India, as of 2011, 31.6% of the human population are located in urban areas. This number has been increasing at a rapid pace. This puts forth the requirement of urban management. CSIR-NEERI, being a pioneer in the field of addressing environmental problems, has established the Centre for Strategic Urban Management to work on the urban environmental sustainability, waste management and green area conservation.
C-SUM was established on the 75thFoundation Day of CSIR (September 26, 2016) with the aim of interacting with urban local bodies and stakeholders for building smart and sustainable cities. It focusses on improving the urban environment and strategies to reduce the carbon footprint. C-SUM achieves this by providing improved policy, environmental planning and management by closely working with the local administration.
