DOMESTIC IRON REMOVAL UNIT (DIRU)

  • The unit developed results in the production of iron free water. The soluble divalent ferrous ions are oxidised to higher valent states during the passage of water through the unit and thus get converted to insoluble precipitates. These precipitates and any other insoluble forms of iron are removed during filteration through the filtering medium. The unit has been tested in the field with water containing more than 15 mg/L iron in soluble ferrous form and 140 - 470 mg/L carbondioxide. Iron was reduced to zero.
  • The DIRU has received wide acceptance and has been quoted by WHO Collaborating Centre, IRC, International Reference Centre for Community Water Supply & Sanitation. Technical paper series no. 18, August 1981, page 204.
  • And also by Ministry of Works and Housing, New Delhi (CPH & EEO) in the "Manual on Water Supply and Treatment" - 2nd Edn., 1976, page 257.

The publication of 'DIRU' has been awarded the 'Gold Medal' by the Institution of Engineers (India).
